n 1992 just out of high school, Amanda Bossard started her education in marine biology with Alaska Pacific University, Anchorage in Alaska. Bossard got her start in the industry of commercial seafood in 1999. At the time, she worked as a fisherman on Murat Aritan's 65 foot halibut boat, which was transformed into a fish tender. Bossard and Aritan have been married since 1993 and are working together to claim their place in their respective industries. They support conservative, profitable management of renewable seafood resources. In 2007, the mother of two children Bella age 3 and Andre 1 Bossard and then relocating back to live in Philadelphia established a direct market wholesale distributor of seafood known as Otolith. The name Otolith serves as an affectionate reminder of Bossard's intimate understanding of the biology of fish and her husband's many connections in the business of fishing. They are often separated for up to 5 months at a stretch while they pursue financial and environmental goals that reflect their commitment and autonomy wherever they are. Bossard along with her two children Andre 10, and Isabella 12 return every year to Southeast Alaska as deckhands to collect wild salmon in the summer. A small 42-salmon troller, using hooks and line to catch their targeted salmon, they work with Aritan to work for the duration of two months selling to local processors. They also continue to grow their direct market seafood items sold via Otolith Sustainable Seafood by way by purchasing custom processing capabilities of small processors who create distinctive wild-caught seafood that reflects their passion for quality as well as environmental sustainability.
